Leroux tried his comm again then swore.

“Nothing. The terrain must be blocking us,” he said. “What do we do, James? The Roar needs to know about this—Volka treating with the Gehenna… with those things.”

I didn’t disagree.

The sight before us was, to say the least, noteworthy.

Volka stood side-by-side with a Jinaoren. Two predators standing shoulder-to-shoulder.

To the left and right of Volka were his warband—three Noctus Blades, their figures blurred in Stealth if I looked at them outside of my Void Map, blending into the dusty shadows. Each of them moved with a quiet intensity, exuding the menace of those trained to disappear, kill, and vanish again.

I tried to calculate the best way forward.

We’d portalled out here, the glowing oval of gold just over the ridge behind us, about a thirty-minute run if we pushed hard. But even with the head start of the ridge between us, a Jinaoren could catch us in no time if it knew we were here.

“We can’t risk letting this happen,” Leroux whispered. “Whatever they’re planning… it can’t be good.” He cast a sidelong look at me, tension thrumming from him like a live wire. He wanted to take the shot. To take Volka off the board. “You can guide my shot. We can end this now.”

I knew he was right, but…

I scanned the meeting again, squinting against the Martian light. Volka was talking to the Jinaoren, his face impassive as he gestured toward the vast landscape beyond. The two Noctus Blades flanked him on either side, eyes sharp, following their leader’s every movement.

Hang on… two?

A prickling fear surged through me. There had been three when we spotted them, hadn’t there?

My stomach lurched as a shadow resolved behind us. The third Noctus Blade, silent as death, was right there, driving a knife into Leroux’s chest.

A horrible, wet gasp escaped Leroux as he tried to roll away, blood spilling over his hand as he tried to staunch the wound. The Noctus Blade was already on its feet, whipping around to face me, blade gleaming as it prepared to strike.

But rage took over before it could move.

I swung my stave, the hardened steel cracking against the Noctus Blade’s skull with a crunch that left no argument.

With that strike I killed my first Pure.

His body dropped instantly, lifeless on the Martian soil. But the damage was done. Leroux was bleeding heavily—too heavily—his face pale and lips turning blue.

The sound of the attack must have reached Volka’s group because suddenly, they turned, their eyes sharp as they locked onto us. There was no hiding now.

Instinct took over. I reached out with a burst of Mind Lance, sending a shockwave across the gap between us. I’d aimed at Volka, but the Noctus Blade to his right staggered under the attack, collapsing to the ground, red starbursts exploding in their eyes.

I was really bursting my Pure-killing cherry today.

Then the Jinaoren’s head spun in our direction, eyes narrowing with a glint of deadly purpose.

“Shit,” I muttered, my heart racing. The creature was on the move, leaping forward, heading straight for us.
